Stories about my husband and I driving in the state of Texas thru small towns full of dirt backroads to paved streets and highways. Texas where we drive until we just pick a place to stop, shop, eat and explore these small towns adventures.
Enchanted Rock
As we head out of our hometown of San Antonio, on a crisp chilly Sunday early afternoon we shoot down on yonder for about 69 miles down the stretch of Ih-10 till we hit 87 north for a few more miles and into Fredericksburg Texas. We find ourselves cruising along the winding curving roads until we see a sign that says ENCHANTED ROCK 14 miles away then we see the sign blinking that says we may need reservations.
I tell my husband to get on his phone and google enchanted rock and to make reservations, so he does but the only open time slot is 1-3pm so he pays and books it right away while we are miles away. As we pull up there is 2 park rangers in the front asking questions and I state to them that we have reservations, and they say to us we close at 3 today. I advise but we still have a Reversation, and the park ranger replied OKAY, you all can go in but need to be driving out of this park by no later than 3pm. Of course, we’ll be out by then, but excuse me ma’am how long does it take to go up that big pink round rock that looks like a mountain. The park ranger then said 2 hours round trip up and back down. Well, you see what happen was when we checked in and grabbed our mini backpacks with water and snacks it was 1:45pm. So, we start walking at a fast pace but Insync with one another and the closer we get the big pink mountain which looks like a big rock. It felt like we were never going to make it to the top. It was my husband’s first time ever being there of course not mine, but he said Sorry, love I hate to disappoint you, but we won’t make it all the way up there it’s a HUGE MOUNTAIN! Mind you I have my timer set for 2:45 pm to use as the turn back time down the boulder. So were huffing and puffing as we go up and then stop for a few minutes and once we get to the big boulder, we are standing sideways by it enjoying the air. We see an older couple in the late 70’s coming down. My hubby was hmm. If they can do it, we can too! I snicker and smile to myself as I’m looking at the clock we have t-Munis 30 minutes to get back to the car. So, I suggested like a kid, I’ll race you up the steep hill, so we did for a minute. The angle on the rock makes it difficult to climb and as we breathe heavily, we are trying different techniques to climb and go up the enormous boulder were hiking on. As we are walking up going forward as normal, we start walking backwards even walking sideways which works out pretty well. Finally, we make it to the top of enchanted rock and in the middle, we have a 360-degree view of all the amazing scenery as far as the eye can witness, it starts to get windy and cold while the sun is still shining upon us the sun rays kissing our faces leaving us with a warm feeling. Right at the center of the boulder where we stood, we felt we had no worriers in the world, inhaling the freshness and natural beauty of mother nature while admiring the forming of rocks in canyon. Making videos and taking pictures of us and the spectacular view. All of a sudden, the alarm went off as we rushed back down the boulder and into our vehicle. WHEW, but let me tell you it was easy and faster hiking down then climbing all the way up.

As we ended our hiking journey at this natural state park, which we started our hike at 1:45pm we were down and out by 2:45pm great timing the Park rangers said. I can say that was one of my fastest times up and down the hike, for sure my husband’s! Our trip was great making wonderful memories. Planning on going back very soon in the near future to explore the hidden caves and crevices. Then off to visit the old small German town for some German grub and check out the wineries!
